Should Have Called Acme...

I wanted to experiment with hammering some silver components for some new designs. I had a regular hammer, the kind you would bang nails with, but I didn't have a proper anvil. I was using a small flat area on a wrench but that was not working so well. I figured Lowe's or Home Depot would have anvils - they seem like things people would use in a workshop - but apparently anvils are not so in demand that stores would stock them. We even asked for a simple flat lump of metal, but those are not plentiful either. Lest you think I was looking for something Wyle E. Coyote would use on a roadrunner, I really wasn't. I just wanted a small "fun-size" anvil for jewelry. We finally called a metal-smith place in Raleigh and they agreed to saw off a chunk of steel beam for us. It literally looked like something you would find supporting a bridge. So we brought home this chunk of bridge support and I made a few hammered necklaces, which I think were quite nice.
